Mongolia has the largest open grasslands in the world with around 117 million hectares of arid and semi-arid grassland. Mongolia is one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world – second only to Greenland. Families move to different places each season to reduce the environmental impact on pasture, to sustain the grass field and livestock for the herd.
The herd is scattered all over the vast greenfield and have the freedom to move so sustain the pasture management. The rangeland falls into five ecological zones, namely high mountain, forest steppe, steppe, desert steppe, desert with markedly different terrain, climate, flora and fauna (Mongolian Society for Range Management, 2008). Practices of pasture use for grazing livestock vary across these five ecological zones, from nomadic herding in the desert zone to transhumance systems in the more fertile forest steppe.
While grazing all over the rangeland, the herd feeds on the Medicinal herbs that has a big input into the down production.
This is a Mongolian way of life and these people are the backbone of the country’s heritage. The most important factor in the quality of cashmere is the length and then fineness of the fibers. Items made with fine long fibers pill less and maintain their shape better than lower-quality cashmere and will get better with each wash. Shorter fibers do provide softness and loft but increase the amount of pilling on the cashmere item. Mongolian cashmere fiber is longer than any other countries which fluctuated from 40 mm to 45 mm.
