The washi, with a history spanning 1,300 years, is made primarily from natural materials like mulberry bark, carefully crafted sheet by sheet by skilled artisans. It is renowned for its strength, durability, and resistance to humidity.
Produced in Tokigawa Town, an area with a rich papermaking tradition dating back to the 8th century, the washi—known as Musashi or Ogawa washi—has been widely produced across western Saitama, flourishing due to its proximity to Edo (modern-day Tokyo), a major center for paper consumption.
The lampshade incorporates mulberry bark, giving it a unique texture. Its distinctive double-layered structure enhances the natural beauty of the washi when illuminated, while maintaining the overall balance of the design.
The spindle, crafted from cherry wood, is shaped using woodturning techniques perfected in Hida-Takayama.
