With a 1,300-year history, the washi is primarily made from mulberry bark and meticulously handcrafted by skilled artisans. Renowned for its strength, durability, and resistance to humidity, this washi is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
The washi is produced in Tokigawa Town, where papermaking has been practiced since the 8th century. Known as Musashi or Ogawa washi, this paper has long been crafted in the western Saitama region, thriving particularly due to its proximity to Edo (modern-day Tokyo), a major hub for paper consumption.
The lampshade, made from this hand-dyed washi using walnut tannins, features a distinctive double-layered structure that enhances the texture and glow of the washi when illuminated. The spindle is crafted from maple wood, shaped using woodworking lathe techniques refined in Hida Takayama. The combination of wood and brass materials adds a striking accent that complements the overall design.
